God give us the grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed;
Courage to change the things that should be changed;
And the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.
-REINHOLD NEIBUHR
I have been trying to live this philosophy for the past few years. I say trying because some days I find it really hard to accept those things that can't be changed. I find myself asking that rhetorical "why" question to no avail. It seems to me that when circumstances or changes hit us that we are powerless over, our first instincts are denial and anger. First we find it very difficult to believe or accept. Then, after reality smacks us right in the face, we tend to get angry. These are both normal human reactions. I think what is very interesting is how differently human beings react to difficult circumstances and changes.
Some of us throw up our hands and give up. Others seek vengence or an eye for an eye type mentality. For example, when Hurricane Katrina hit some people may have thought that there was really nothing they could do and therefore, did nothing. Other people, actually left their jobs, got in their cars and physically saved hurricane survivors from the roofs of their submerged homes. I think most of us fall somewhere in between.
Change is never easy. Change is usually greeted with resistance. Accepting that things cannot be changed with serenity and grace? You gotta be kiddin' me!
People come to me all the time wanting to change how they look and how they feel. That I can do. I can help motivate and encourage people to achieve their goals. But it takes courage for most people to ask for help, to make lifestyle changes, and work hard. If you are reading this, you probably have contacted me at some point in time to evoke a physical change for yourself or someone you love. Hopefully, I have helped or are helping you to achieve the changes you desire in your health and fitness life. I thank you for that opportunity.
